3 Essential Skincare Steps for Radiant Skin

Image
Your skin can be left looking dull and lifeless due to poor diet, a bad skincare regime or simply through ageing. Many people try to cover up damaged or dull skin with make-up, rather than actually treating the skin condition itself, which can in turn cause further skin problems such as spots and irritation. So, it is essential that you treat the skin itself instead of covering up the problems, as this will help it to appear healthy and radiant again. Here are the three most important steps to follow for a naturally glowing complexion ... Image via Nico Paix 1. Choose the RIGHT cleanser for you To revitalise and rejuvenate the skin you should use a good cleanser which is appropriate for your skin type - what works for your friend may be doing more damage than good on your own skin, because our skin types are all so unique. Defects of vision and their correction

Image
The main features of the human eye     This image is a simplified diagram of the human eye.      In many respects it is similar to the camera . An image is formed by the eye lens on the sensitive retina at the back of the eye, whence a message is transmitted to the brain by way of the optic nerve . The iris the colored membranous disk, with a pupil in the center. It has two types of muscular fibers: circular and radial . In the bright light   the circular fibers contract and the radial fibers relax : the pupil becomes less in size to reduce the amount of light that enters. in the less light the circular muscles relax, and the radial ones contract. The pupil then becomes wider so that more light will enter to facilitate vision. in other words, the colored portion of the eye automatically adjusts the size of the pupil or circular opening in its center according to the intensity of the light falling on it. Focusing of the image...

5 Common Mental Health Issues Americans Face

Image
cc licensed flickr photo shared by Robert Couse-Baker In any given year, 25% of adults will be diagnosed with a mental health condition. What follows are the most common mental health problems Americans face. Phobias About 2.2% of phobia sufferers are diagnosed with agoraphobia, the fear of open spaces. This fear causes panic when a person feels crowded or thinks they will be unable to find a place to escape should they be trapped. Another 4.4% are diagnosed with a specific phobia, such as fear of heights. These fears produce sweating, rapid heart rate and panic when confronted by the fear. Finally, 3.7% of people are found to have social anxiety. This condition surfaces when the person has to interact socially with others. Saying the wrong thing on a regular basis, being unsure of how to approach someone in conversation and feeling like a misfit can also be signs of a social phobia. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Once thought to only affect children, ADHD is presenting...

Mixing colored lights explained

Image
This is the second part of our discussion about dispersion and color . And we’ll learn about: 1- Color of objects in white light. 2- Light filters. 3- Appearance of colored objects in colored light. 4- Primary and secondary colors. 5- Mixture of colored lights. 6- Mixing colored pigments. and 7- Infrared and ultraviolet light. So let’s begin our course! . Mixing colored lights explained 1- Color of objects in white light When white light falls on any particular body, then either all the colors in white light may be reflected from the body, when it appears white, or only some of them may be reflected while the others are absorbed. In the latter case the body appears colored. The energy of light absorbed is generally converted into internal energy (for more details about internal energy, read work, energy and power part 2 ) so that the body becomes slightly warmer . The color which the body presents to the eye is the the color of light which it reflec...

Dispersion and color: Newton’s experiments

Image
It had been known for centuries that small fragments of colorless glass and precious stones glittered in bright colors when white light passed through them, but it was NOT until the middle of the seventeenth century that Sir Isaac Newton investigated the problem systematically. Newton's work on this subject arose out of the need for finding a way of removing coloration from the images seen through a telescope. At that time this instrument had recently been invented by a Dutch spectacle-maker named Hans Lippershey . Newton's experiment with a prism Newton began his experiments by making a small hole in one of the window shutters of his room at Cambridge. Light from the sun streamed through this hole and made a circular white patch on the opposite wall. On placing a triangular glass prism before the hole, an elongated colored patch of light was formed on the wall. Newton called this a spectrum , and noted that the colors formed were in the order Red, Orange, Yello...

Electromagnetic waves illustration: Origin and sources

Image
Electromagnetic waves   When the wave theory of light first gained general acceptance it was considered that light waves were conveyed through a transparent elastic medium which filled the whole of space, even a vacuum. This substance was called the ether . Michael Faraday's move   A further step forward was made in 1845, when Michael Faraday showed that, under certain conditions, light was passing through a material medium were affected by a magnetic field. Now by that time, it was known that there was an inseparable connection between magnetism and electricity. Faraday's experiment gave a strong hint that light might well have electrical properties . It is James Clerk Maxwell's move   Some years later, the eminent mathematician and physicist, James Clerk Maxwell , became very interested in Faraday's work on electricity and eventually put forward a mathematical theory suggesting that an oscillating electric current should be capable of radiating ener...

How the wave Nature of light was first discovered

Image
Strong evidence for the wave theory of light    First, we need to know:   Interference   When two ball-ended dippers are attatched to the vibrator of the ripple tank, two sets of circular ripples are sent out which pass through one another as shown in the image.   Where the two waves are superposed in the same phase, e.g., crest on crest, we get lines of increased disturbance or constructive interference . These are called the anti-nodal lines. In between these are the nodal lines along which the waves are exactly out of phase, e.g., the crests of one are superposed on the troughs of the other. Here, provided the amplitudes of the two waves are the same, we now get zero resultant disturbance of the water surface, or destructive interference .   A similar interference pattern is obtained if either a straight or a circular wave is incident on a vertical barrier having two small apertures. In this case, interference takes place between ...

Strength of materials. Elasticity and Hooke’s law

Image
Before various materials are used in the construction of machinery and buildings, tests are accomplished to ensure that they are able safely to stand up to the stresses to which they are likely to be subjected. Industrial laboratories have special apparatus for carrying out these tests.        Brittle substances such as masonry and cast iron will support large weights or forces of compression, but will easily break if stretching ‘tensile’ forces are applied. Where tensile forces are involved an elastic material such as steel is used. Definition of Elasticity :        Elasticity is the ability of a substance to recover its original shape and size after distortion . Robert Hooke’s law        During the time London was being rebuilt after the great fire of 1666  a great deal of research went on in connection with building construction and the strength of materials. ...
